An independent individual who does not go along with a group or party ~
Merriam-Webster Online

One that refuses to abide by the dictates of or resists adherence to a group; a dissenter. ~
The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition

The meaning of the word maverick seems fitting as a title for a publication envisioned to provide news and information on the Texas and Red Dirt music scenes. The definition of the word seems to speak of the individuality and “stick to your guns” attitude apparent in the song writing and lifestyles of the artists as well as the fans who follow them. It is the goal of this publication to embody the music, lifestyle and personalities prominent of both the Texas and Red Dirt movements.

We, in accordance with the name, will do things differently . . .starting with the name. We couldn’t spell it just like everyone else! You’ve already seen that this magazine is very “in your face”, so to speak. It does include profanity and some adult subject matter. It is not sugar coated or cleaned up so as not to offend anyone. That will not change. We made a promise to many artists and fans alike at the very beginning that we would publish stories that were honest and up front about the lifestyle that goes along with the music we all love. We also promised to provide the artists a place to publish what they have to say in an unedited format. In some cases, that does include references to drugs and alcohol. In most cases that includes the use of profanity. You hear cussing and see people drinking every time you go to a live performance. Why would we make this publication focusing on live music any different?

We will provide both sides to the arguments that seem to abound in every crowd at every show. Such as Nashville vs. Texas or Red Dirt vs. Texas. Most of the time the people involved in those arguments don’t have any more information to go on than some passing comment one of the musicians made on stage. Mavrik Magazine’s goal isn’t necessarily to change your mind, just to give you information on which to base a more educated opinion.
